I was thinking about how many camps that I have worked at or know people working at that are starting camp for the summer in these couple of weeks. Camps all over the nation. Friends from all over the nation are ministring the gospel this summer to youths and their families. Christian camping has played a big role in my life from the time I was a little girl. My family went to Horn Creek Family Camp in Colorado as we were growing up. It’s hard to put into words just how much those years together at Horn Creek mean. There are so many wonderful memories of climbing Horn Peak, banquet dinners, the rec center, shopping in Westcliffe, game nights, skit nights and the list goes on. But it’s more than just those things, the Lord used family camp in my family’s life to draw us to Him and to each other. These years are something that I will always be grateful for.
I’ve been blessed to be able to be summer staff at various camps around the nation for the past 6 years. I’ve met some of my best friends in the world through this. Even though we don’t get to talk a lot, when we do it’s like we never left off. I still always smile at staff orientation when the camp directors say…look around this circle because the people here will be in your wedding someday….it’s true! (I mean not that I would know since I’m not married yet…but that’s the caliber of friendships that are formed). I had the opportunity to see most of the United States. But most of all I got to watch God work in the hearts of youth and see Him draw them to Himself.
I’m excited to know of and have ties to so many camps this summer. One of the things that I’ve been thinking about is, it’s so exciting that all of these camps get to share in this kingdom work in these kids lives. It’s special to see that the gospel is being sent out in so many parts of our nation right now and that Christian kids are being discipled and mentored in their walk with the Lord. This ministry is a huge task. I’d just like to take a minute and challenge you to pray for the camping ministries that you know about this summer. “Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” (Heb. 4)
These summers were by far the best summers of my life…each different in their own unique way, but still treasured summers. But they were also the hardest summers of my life. Because camp ministry is such a powerful ministry in these kids lives–it’s something that Satan does not want to happen and he will do anything in his power to stop it. The spiritual warfare during these summers was so difficult and seeing the ways that Satan was attempting to sabotage God’s work. I can tell you from personal experience, the prayers of other believers are felt and coveted.
“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” (Eph. 6)
